William George Ballinger went to South Africa in 1928 as an advisor to the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union of Africa (I.C.U.), a black trade-union. After the collapse of the I.C.U. in the 1930s, Ballinger worked with its successor, the Society of Friends. From 1948 to 1960 he represented Transvaal and Orange Free State Africans in the Senate. Violet Margaret Livingstone Ballinger was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1894, and moved to South Africa in 1904. Following an academic career, she concentrated her energy on politics and in 1937 was elected native representative for the Cape Eastern Circle, a seat she held until 1960.
